iPhone SE Review 2020

iPhone SE Review

There are many ways to think of Apple's new $ 399 iPhone SE. One is that it is a more affordable option than the iPhone 11 ($ 699 at Apple) with surprisingly similar camera specs, which it is. Or that it is the 2020 sequel to the original SE from 2016, which it is also. Or, 4.7 inches, that it is the smallest and cheapest iPhone you can currently buy (although it is not as small). Or (this is my favorite way to think about it) that it is an iPhone 11 with the mind and power of an iPhone 8. In fact, the new iPhone SE is all these things and that's why I'm enamored with it.

iPhone SE Review 2020

The new iPhone SE features a classic design that defined the iPhone for its first 10 years. The design, body and camera lens are the same as the 2017 iPhone 8. But Apple did a clever brain transplant, replacing the nearly 3-year-old processor with the A13 bionic processor used on the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11. Pro max. It overcomes a simple fantasy bump by improving things like cameras and battery life. The new processor not only runs faster, but it will also future-proof the phone through iOS updates.

But a $ 399 (£ 419, AU $ 749) iPhone comes with a compromise, which Apple wisely chose. The SE has only a single rear camera, does not have Face ID and lacks camera features such as night mode, slophyses and deep fusion processing. The selfie camera is fine, but not as amazing as found on the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max.

When you look at the full picture, the iPhone SE represents the highest price for selling any of your Apple phones. It has attractive pricing, great battery life, great rear camera, A13 processor, water resistance and support for wireless charging. The SE is not only an amazing iPhone, but one of the best budget phones you can currently buy.

iPhone SE Review

Physically, the SE is an iPhone 8. The front and back are made of glass, the chassis and side are aluminum. The only physical difference between the iPhone SE and the iPhone 8 is that Apple's logo is now centered backwards to match the current generation of iPhones.

The new phone has Apple's old school forehead and chin up and down the screen. It makes the SE look good, it is old. This is one of the few things I'm not too thrilled about. It's not ugly, it's just dated. And it may appeal to some people, but not me.
After using Face ID for the past few years, Touch ID has a strange and familiar feeling to set up and use. It is like moving from an automatic transmission to a stick shift. But in the right car, the stick shift can be a blast.

I forget how much I missed the home button and how it makes conversation and navigation less fussy than swipes and holds. Instead of angling my phone to get a Face ID verification, I tap and hold to pay for purchases. A fast double-tap shows recent apps. Although Face ID has its advantages, using the home button is as satisfying as back in the day.

For younger phone lovers, the iPhone SE's 4.7-inch LCD display is not as small as the original SE's 4-inch screen. But it is still smaller than most phones and is sufficient for most people to be portable and comfortable.

The screen on the SE is similar to the one on the iPhone 11, especially in terms of quality and resolution. The text looks sharp, the colors are accurate and it is bright in sunny conditions.

iPhone SE

The iPhone SE is rated IP67, which means it can be submerged for 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter (about 3 feet). I was not able to test this claim, although I dipped it in one liter of water for 30 minutes and all was well. This level of water and dust resistance is not something you would typically find on phones under $ 400, so it is particularly notable that the iPhone SE has it.

The SE comes in three colors: Black, White and Red. The iPhone 8 also had its own red version, but it had white bezels and damn if the iPhone SE doesn't look more striking in red with black bezels.

The iPhone SE has a longer battery life than the iPhone 8

Apple's website says that the iPhone SE battery is the same as the iPhone 8, but my testing showed that it lasts for a very long time. I played a looped video on Airplane mode at 50% brightness and the iPhone SE ran for 15 hours, 45 minutes. How many hours did the iPhone 8 and iPhone SE last in the same test compared to being new. Spontaneously, it made it through another day and a half without a problem, and a couple of times it went two days straight without a charge.

I should note that I have more battery tests to run (including streaming video tests), so I'll check back when I update the results.

The iPhone SE has wireless charging, which is another feature not found in most budget phones. There is also support for fast-charging, which fills up to 50% of the battery in 30 minutes. But the iPhone SE does not come with the required 18-watt charger and instead includes a slower 5-watt one. Again, this is likely to keep the cost of the device down.

iPhone SE features A13 bionic processor

The longevity of Apple's iOS support for "older devices" is a cool but important appeal for an iPhone owner. The iPhone 8 and its A11 processor are now two and a half years old and will likely stop receiving iOS software updates a few years before the iPhone SE and its new A13 bionic processor.

In performance tests, the iPhone SE was consistently better than the iPhone 8 and (no surprise) the original iPhone SE. We got similar results to what we found on the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max.

In real life, which meant that app launches were disgusting, playing games like Sky: Children's Light and Walt's Day of Walt were a breeze. The photos were easy to edit and I could also use graphics-heavy AR apps such as Wonderscope, which turned my bedroom into a training ground for ghosts.

iPhone SE cameras have portrait mode, smart HDR

The rear camera on the SE has the same specs as the iPhone 8, but when combined with the A13 chip and iOS 13, it turns the camera into something that can compete with the best phone cameras, and even The main rear camera on the iPhone 11 can also go with that toe. It has many features including smart HDR, quick tech filming with photos, and portrait mode - these are impressive features and are the first for the $ 399 iPhone.

The rear camera on the SE has a 28mm f1.8 lens while the iPhone 11 has two rear cameras: a main wide-angle camera with a 26mm f1.8 lens and an ultravide-angle camera with a 13mm f / 2.4 lens.  I enjoy Ultra-Angle on the iPhone 11, but I didn't miss it during my time with the iPhone SE.

When I compare photos taken with each phone, it is difficult to distinguish between them unless you bring them to the big screen and even then the differences are subtle.

In good light, photos from each are similar in terms of image quality. Look at the pictures under a tree in my backyard. Can you tell the difference? You see my point The most obvious difference is that the iPhone SE photo is tighter than the iPhone 11.

Both phones have portrait mode and it gives excellent results. 11 can capture portrait mode photos of both people and pets. The iPhone SE, like the iPhone XR ($ 599 at Apple), can only be accessed by people. It's not until you look at the pictures below so closely that you can see that the portrait mode of the iPhone 11 captures a bit more detail and less noise.

In the picture below my shoulder, you will see the quality dropping from the focus on the iPhone 11 to the out-of-focus areas compared to the iPhone SE on the iPhone 11.
